Beat eggs well then add milk, sugar and vanilla. Stir until sugar has dissolved. Strain into a greased pie dish. Place small pieces of butter on top. Sprinkle with nutmeg. Spread bread lightly with butter and jam, remove crusts and cut into triangles. Arrange on top of custard mixture. Add a few sultanas is desired. Make sure bread is saturated before baking. Stand in a baking dish of water and bake in a slow oven until set.
