Cream butter & sugar until light & fluffy
Add egg & beat well.
Sift flour with spices, fold lighting into creamed mixture
Spread half the mixture on base of 7 or 8 inch square cake tin
Cover with apples, spread remaining mixture on top
Bake in a moderate oven approx 45 minutes or until golden brown
Serve hot or cold, with ice cream or custard.
